Grace Oh: Platonic Refractions

As photography means writing with light, the juxtaposition of the prismatic still objects and the filter I used to refract light reminded me of why I started photographing in the first place.

Artist’s Statement

"Platonic Refractions" came about as a reiteration on a series I did several years before called "Refractions."  It was birthed as an inspired thought for a group show I was asked to participate in many years ago. I was photographing commercially, assisting, and did some personal work around life, nature, portraits but decided to go within to a more solitary process as when I was painting to birth the "Refractions" series.

As photography means writing with light, the juxtaposition of the prismatic still objects and the filter I used to refract light with unpredictable motion incited excitement and reminded me of why I started photographing in the first place.

After the wave of attention waned to stillness from this project. I wanted to continue with the experimentation of light play. During this time I was coincidentally shifting subtly within, examining the choices I had been making with my work. And it was clear I was spending many hours creating images for clients that did not always resonate with where my spirit was aligning towards. The frustration of an imbalanced state of creativity, had me once again go within and find what had inspired me the most with in a state of joy with my work and whole being.

As I traversed the terrain of my soul, I came towards sound healing. On this quest of discovering magic and healing moments after moments. I received much work, studied sound therapy, energetic modalities and I eventually have become a practitioner. Through this practice I re-discovered sacred geometry and the natural healing components of them. The whole existence of nature and man is comprised of sacred geometry. My joy of re-connecting with this ancient metaphysical science had me inspired once again to share the beauty, message, and vibration of these symbols.

When "Platonic Refractions" was born, the intent was to use the same technique of light play as I did in "Refractions" but the crystalline quality of the quartz as platonic solids took on a whole new life for me.

  • Tetrahedron : Fire

  • Cube: Earth

  • Octahedron: Air

  • Dodecahedron:  Ether

  • Icosahedron: Water

Science and Nature in perfect harmony as they are represented in these geometric forms. It has informed me by it's mere presence in my consciousness, the infinite possibilities of using available present energies in the most vibrational and harmonizing pathway for the good of all and the spaces these pieces reside in.
